Maybank Malaysian Open golf championship prize money increased |
KUALA LUMPUR: The prize money for next year's Maybank Malaysian Open golf championship has been increased by another US$50,000, bringing the total to US$1.3mil.
Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) president Datuk Thomas Lee announced the decision on Monday and said the championship would be held at the Saujana Golf and Country Club (SGCC) from Feb 8-11.
“The inaugural Malaysian Open in 1962 provided a mere RM22,500 in prize money. Today, it has grown into a million-dollar event,” said Lee.
“The championship will be held in February and we are confident that it will attract some of the big names in golf as it is part of the Asian and European Tours.
"We are unable to provide any names at the moment but we hope to finalise them soon,” added Lee.
This year's Malaysian Open was held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club and was won by South Korea's Charlie Wi.
Lee said that a national qualifying tournament would be held in January to allow one more Malaysian to play in the championship.
Eight other Malaysians are allowed direct entry into the championship.
“The qualifying tournament will only be for Malaysians. We allowed four professionals and four amateurs to play this year.
"The number of amateurs might be restricted next year as the Asian PGA are not keen to allow too many amateurs in their Tour events,” he said.
Maybank, which is sponsoring the championship for the second year, also announced a tie-up with the MGA to organise a National Junior Camp.
“We hope to groom the country's junior golfers for the bigger stage,” said Maybank president and chief executive officer Datuk Amirsham Abdul Aziz. |
